The Swedish category B practical driving test: preparation and test day
Prepare for the practical test, choose a manual or automatic car and check identification; official requirements are separated from practice suggestions.

What to know
The category B practical test assesses safe driving, not memorisation of a particular route. The allocated appointment is 45 minutes and covers a vehicle safety check, manoeuvring and driving in traffic. Practise within the legal framework; private learner driving requires a driving permit and an approved supervisor. For your own planning, divide skills into those you perform independently, those needing reminders and those still needing instruction. This is Dorehami’s practice suggestion, not an official scoring model.
Prepare before starting
- The basic B-licence requirements include a valid driving permit, valid risk training and passing both tests; the usual minimum age is 18. If you already hold an EEA licence or an automatic-only condition, check the route for your circumstances separately.
- A standard practical test uses a car supplied by Trafikverket or a training provider, not a private car. Clarify who arranges the vehicle and when to arrive. Do not assume a car used for a practice lesson is also booked for the test.
- Pass the theory test before the practical test. Check its validity using the related theory guide and your own booking information. Plan practice, vehicle availability and document validity together; having an appointment is not itself proof that you are ready.
A practical step-by-step approach
- Ask your instructor or approved supervisor for specific feedback after practice: what did you handle independently and where was help needed? Choose an observable target for the next session rather than only counting hours.
- Familiarise yourself with the training car’s controls, such as lights and windscreen wipers. During practice, go beyond naming the parts: discuss what needs checking with the instructor and ask for explanations where your understanding is incomplete.
- Before test day, review the booking, meeting point, transmission type and identification. Bring valid physical identification accepted by Trafikverket; digital BankID is insufficient. Do not send identity documents to the Dorehami group for checking.
- If nervous, explain before starting and ask about unclear instructions. As personal mental preparation, take a moment before driving to recall the session’s purpose: demonstrating safe decisions, not putting on a hurried performance.
- After the test, privately note the examiner’s explanation. If more practice is needed, plan the relevant skills with your instructor and agree how feedback will be given. This planning suggestion guarantees neither the date nor the outcome of another test.
Different circumstances and cautions
Passing in an automatic car results in condition 78, limiting the licence to automatic vehicles. Choose a transmission that fits your needs before booking; removing this condition is a different route from obtaining a first licence. Video or audio recording during the practical test is prohibited. Check fees, rebooking conditions and particular needs through official services. This guide offers no fixed prices, appointment-availability claims or pass guarantee.
A common question
How can I discuss readiness with my instructor?
Choose a specific situation from the previous session and ask what you could have noticed earlier, which decision would have been better and how improvement will be checked next time. Move from general praise to a concrete example. If a skill still requires repeated reminders, include it in the practice plan rather than concealing it. This suggested conversation does not replace the examiner’s official assessment.
